Hollister – Victoria Madiline Hines was born on August 31, 1942, in Hollister, North Carolina to Ineta (Lynch) Hines and Tracy Hines. After graduating from Eastman High School in 1960, she moved to New York City, where she lived in Harlem and took the subway to her job at Gimbels department store downtown.
Victoria married her high school sweetheart, Roger Lynch, on July 4, 1964. They moved to Flint, Michigan and welcomed three children: Anthony Roger, Quinton Tracy, and Rosalyn Victoria. During the hospitalization of their son Quint, who sadly passed away as an infant, they met Pastor Avery Aldridge, who comforted them through this difficult time and invited them to visit his church. They joined the Foss Avenue Baptist Church, became active members, and found their “Michigan family.” Victoria sang in the choir, served on the floral club, and could often be found in the kitchen or decorating for many of the events at the church’s Activity Center over the decades.
Vickie, as she was affectionately known by family and friends, worked at Hurley Medical Center in the medical records department for 30 years until she retired. She made many memories and life-long friends along the way. Upon retirement, she and Roger returned to North Carolina and re-joined the Pine Chapel Baptist Church. Vickie served as a Deaconess, sang in the choir, and assisted with events and outreach for as long as she was able to. She also loved to wear hats, much like her mother, Ineta.
Growing up as the oldest daughter of the family, Victoria preferred working outside over doing chores inside. She carried this love of nature and green thumb with her north, growing all manner of plants and flowers in and around the house. She even managed to coax tomatoes and cucumbers into growing in a small patch of dirt behind the garage and covered the chain-link fence with grapevines, whose grapes from which she made jelly every harvest. She continued her love of growing flowers, plants, and vegetables until she was no longer able to maintain a garden. Even then, she would stop to admire the flowers that grew around her home or anywhere else.
In addition to gardening, Victoria also enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and especially quilting. It was not uncommon to see her with a basket next to her chair in the family room with her latest project underway. Many friends and family members have at least one of her quilts, which are now cherished keepsakes.
Victoria was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, niece, and friend. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger Lynch; son, Quinton Lynch; parents, Tracy and Ineta Hines; brother, Tracy Hines, Jr.; sister, Joyce Hines; brother, Nathaniel Hines; and several brothers- and sisters- in law, extended family members, and friends.
She leaves to cherish precious memories her son, Anthony (Lee) Lynch; daughter, Rosalyn (Ty) Jackson; grandchildren Phillipe, Nigel, and Maya Tatem; brothers James Curtis Hines and Robert Jearl (Doris) Hines; sisters Jeanette (Leo) Farmer and Julia Hines; and a host of nieces, nephews, brothers- and sisters- in law, extended family, and friends, and her beloved cat companion, Morgan.
