ROCKY MOUNT – Rita Ellis Millwood, age 66, passed away surrounded by her loving family, on Wednesday, July 29, 2026. Born in Pitt County, NC on November 4, 1959, she was the daughter of the late Johnnie Lee Harris and Betty Mayo Butts. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Margie; and her half-siblings, Eva and Dickie.
Rita dedicated 17 years of her life working at Barcalounger before spending another 17 years cleaning homes for families she cared for deeply She took great pride in her work and treasured the relationships she built with those she served.
More than any career or accomplishment, Rita’s greatest joy was her family. Being “Mama” and especially “Gigi” were the titles she wore with the most pride. Her grandchildren were the light of her life, and every moment spent with them was one she cherished.
She loved spending days at the lake with her family, laughing around a game of Left Right Center, and creating memories that her family will treasure forever. Rita loved fiercely. She believed family should stick together, and she never stopped showing up for the people she loved.
If you knew Rita, you knew exactly what she was thinking. She was a firecracker, strong-willed, and never one to sugarcoat the truth. She told it like it was, stood up for the people she loved, and had a way of making everyone laugh. Beneath that feisty spirit was a heart full of unconditional love, fierce loyalty, and unwavering strength.
Her children and grandchildren always knew they had someone in their corner because Rita believed in them, encouraged them, and loved them with her whole heart. She was a fighter, a protector, and the heart of her family. The lessons she taught, the laughter she shared, and the love she gave so freely will continue to live on through those who knew and loved her.
Rita shared many years of life and family with Thomas Millwood. The love and respect they shared never truly faded. Thomas remained faithfully by her side throughout her illness and until her passing, a testament to the bond they built over more than three decades and the family they cherished together.
Rita is survived by her son, Nicholas Ellis and wife, April; her daughter, Mandy Brake; her son-in-law, Tanner Brake; her cherished grandchildren, James Ellis, Allie Ellis, Ava Brake, and Luke Brake; and her brothers, Johnnie Lee Harris Jr. and Timmy Harris.
In accordance with Rita’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date, with details to be announced by the family.
Though our hearts are broken, we take comfort in knowing that Rita’s legacy lives on in her family. Her love, strength, laughter, and the countless memories she created will never be forgotten. She will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.
