BATTLEBORO – Joseph Barton “Bart” Carmichael, Jr., age 56, left this earth on Saturday, July 17th, 2021. Bart was born in Nash County on August 17th, 1964 to Nellie Burgess Carmichael and the late Joseph Barton Carmichael, Sr. He is also preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Thelma Burgess.
Bart graduated from Rocky Mount Senior High in 1982. During his time in high school, he was quite a trumpeter in the Rocky Mount Senior High Marching Band and his family loved traveling to the band competitions. While in his younger days, Bart reached LIFE status in the Boy Scouts before the local troop disbanded. Bart was a lifelong member of Battleboro United Methodist church. He attended North Carolina Wesleyan College and graduated with a BS in Business in May of 1988. He gained employment at Hardee’s Restaurant and found his passion in the business of restaurants. While employed by Hardee’s he learned and processed the restaurant business ins and outs and ups and downs. Bart was especially good at calculating the cost of every aspect of the business. Bart’s experience and expertise led him to open his own restaurant with partners, Café Carolina and Bakery in Raleigh. He was President of Restaurant Growth Brands and many opportunities opened up for him. Bart loved opening new restaurants and he loved helping restaurant people who were in trouble. He brought many stores back from devastation to life abundantly. Bart had more than 20 years of multi-unit restaurant experience. This truly was his success in life, not only growing businesses but helping others in the same field.
While living out his passion everyone who grew up with Bart or crossed paths in his adult life knew that he loved life to the fullest. If you were around him long you would be smiling and laughing. He loved people and never knew a stranger. His sense of humor and larger than life personality carried him far. Bart loved Carolina, Washington Redskins, Boston Celtics, Nascar, Carolina Hurricanes, and loved to attend concerts.
During his adventure in the restaurant business, Bart married and they had one son together. Cameron Mason Carmichael became Bart’s world. He was so proud of his family and loved taking Cameron to all kinds of sporting events.
Bart is survived by his son, Cameron Mason Carmichael, his mother Nellie Burgess Carmichael, his brothers, Anthony “Tony” Carmichael (Tonia) of Rocky Mount and Todd V. Carmichael (Patricia) of Battleboro. Nieces Brittany Carmichael of Wilmington and Kiersten Carmichael of Rocky Mount, Samantha and Taylor Carmichael of Battleboro, nephew Corey Andrews of Raleigh and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
